Just a half-mile northeast of downtown Kansas City is the wildly popular Crossroads Arts District, and within this cultural mecca is the East Crossroads Craft Beverage District. This little slice of homegrown MO “happy hour” heaven contains the highest concentration of local craft beverage creators in the entire Kansas City metro area. And it’s worth a visit!
The East Crossroads, as they prefer to be called, contains seven local breweries, two distilleries and a winery. It offers says Lara Gray, owner of Casual Animal Brewing Co. “but also colorful street graffiti, record stores, and restaurants featuring some of Kansas City’s up and coming culinary artists.”The East Crossroads offers great food,Missouri-sourced wine, beer gardens, spirits, live music, and craft beer. “The Kansas City East Crossroads is a friendly, walkable neighborhood experience with not only award-winning craft beer, distilled beverages, and wine, ays Lara Gray, owner of Casual AnimalBrewing Co. “but also colorful street graffiti, record stores, and restaurants featuring some of Kansas City’s up and coming culinary artists.”

Border Brewing Company, Casual Animal Brewing Company, City Barrel Brewery,Double Shift Brewing Company, KC Wineworks, Lifted Spirits Distillery, MeanMule Distilling Co, Red Sash Brewing Company, and Torn Label Brewing Company are all active within the district. And they all pride themselves on unique personalities. Collectively, they pride themselves on working together to help their community succeed.
The creativity at these breweries spans everything from Border's Campfire Porter with a delicate oak finish and Torn Label's Eternal Yammnation—an imperial brown ale with roasted sweet potatoes, toasted marshmallow fluff cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla. Let's not forget Brady's Brew Baltic Porter, from Red Sash Brewing and Casual Animal's Chaos Monkey, a banana cream pie ale. Each brewery in this district has a distinctive vibe which makes for an entertaining brewery-hopping experience.
Border Brewing Company offers free live music Sundays from 2-4pm. $2 of every pint of the rotating "Local Motive" tap at Casual Animal is donated to a local charity. Torn label Brewing Company is a "public house" concept offering Roman pizza and sandwiches expertly paired with one of their draft offerings. City Barrel Brewing is the place to visit for sours and IPAs.
The two distilleries in this district are Lifted Spirits Distillery and Mean Mule Distilling Co. Lifted Spirits Distillery makes a series of gins, a wheat whiskey, absinthe, and vodka. Mean Mule Distilling Co.'s American Agave Spirits is distilled from the agave plant but offers a flavor profile all its own crafted through the distillation process. Both locations showcase their spirits through a variety of innovative cocktails.
For those who want to get the most from an East Crossroads touring experience, an East Crossroads Craft Field Trip card can be purchased for $25 and is the most cost-effective way to go. This card gets buy-one-get-one drinks at each East Crossroads location. This $25 investment purchases around $150 worth of drinks. Of course, it’s not recommended or encouraged to spend it all in one day.
Next “happy hour,” birthday celebration, bachelorette party, or Saturday night, check out the East Crossroads Beverage District and make some memories. Remember to grab those Field Trip cards—they make an excellent gift for birthdays, weddings, and, well, just because!
